South Carolina Birth Certificate

South Carolina residents are getting reminders by the state Department of Motor Vehicles and at airports to have their REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card by October 1, 2020.

Without a state-issued REAL ID, a passport or another valid form of identification, you will not be able to:

  • Pass through airport security
  • Board a domestic commercial flight
  • Enter a secure federal building
  • Visit a military installation

Without a doubt, this will restrict your air travel throughout the United States because you will not be able to pass the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint at airports in South Carolina and other airports around the country. What’s more, you may have difficulty serving on a federal court jury if you are not allowed into the building by security officials because you do not have the proper identification.

To help residents comply with the federal REAL ID mandate, South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) is now issuing REAL ID licenses and identification cards.

Required Documents for REAL ID License or Card

Before heading to the SCDMV, there are few documents that you should gather to make your visit to your local DMV a bit easier.  SCDMV recommends that you bring the following documents to verify your identity and address:

  • Proof of Social Security Number (SSN card or W-2 form)
  • Two proofs of your current address (Utility bill, for instance)
  • Proof of identity (a South Carolina birth certificate or a birth certificate from the state in which you were born or a valid U.S. passport)

If your name is not the same as it is on your birth certificate, you must bring documents, such as a marriage license, that shows all of your legal name changes. Most documents, including a South Carolina birth certificate, can be ordered online.

Why Do You Need a REAL ID?

The reason for the change from a traditional South Carolina driver’s license and identification card to a REAL ID dates back to the events of September 11, 2001.  As a way of getting a handle on airline terrorism, the 9/11 Commission recommended that the federal government establish standards for issuing identification, such as drivers’ licenses.

Following the commission’s recommendation, Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005. The legislation applies to all 50 states and U.S. territories, not just South Carolina chandler ac repair service. Also, a REAL ID driver’s license and identification card in South Carolina will have a gold star in the upper right side of the card.

If you have more questions about being REAL ID-compliant, contact your local SCDMV for more information.
